Question email abuse questions

Hey everyone,

recently a friend of mine has been receiving abusive/threatening emails from some yahoo email address. He is interested in finding out who this person is, I know that the ISP can be gained by checking the email headers of the messages sent but I was wondering if there is a way we can dig deeper or is that information that only the ISP would hold?

He is possibly interested in taking legal action against this person, I have a feeling that the abuse@yahoo.com won't do anything except maybe disable the email address of the sender.

I was wondering, what steps might a person take to take legal action and actually get authorities involved against this person rather than just giving him a little slap on the wrist and disabling his email account.

The main interest is finding out WHO this person is, rather than what IP they are coming from or ISP they are using. Is there a legal way to find this information out?

thanks

Report it to Yahoo. If there is actual threats occurring they should contact the authorities to handle it. It could fall under terroristic threats, assuming what you say is actually taking place.

if you have the guys host name, there is a way to find out what city he is in, and the isp that he uses. then it's just a matter of calling the isp's office in that city and reporting it to the cops. Although, the cops aren't going to do anything for you unless the guy actually starts coming through on some of those threats. best thing you can do is set up a email filter to filter any emails coming from that host name.

Cops don't do shit....buy a gun, deal with it your self :-)

j/k

hotmail and other email services used to let you see all the header info, but i haven't use hotmail/whatever in years. They may have changed it.

How do you see the sender's IP address in hotmail? I need to know this because I got some abuse e-mails, and I think it's one of my friends.

If you try setting up POP3 with hotmail I know you used to be able to view all the headers. Or spam the sender back with a couple of "presents"

Is it too late if they've stopped sending messages? I still want to find out who it is.

Okay, I got e-mail tracker pro. It's asking for me to paste in the header. Where in hotmail can I find the headers of the messages?
