Scared.....

Hi.I'm a complete beginer to computers.I am 27 years old.I wanted to learn something new to do in spare time so I looked at all the languages and choose java.At first I thought I could just buy a book and learn.(Java 2 weekend crash course written by Sanchez Canton.)But after about the third chapter the book totaly lost me.Eventhough I was never realy sure what the first three chapter were talking about anyways.I found the words used to be like reading a book in a foreign language.I've looked for a dictonary that may have these type words in them on the web but I havent found any.Like I said I'm new and got spare time.I see theres a lot of people asking for help in the forum so I won't but if you understand what im saying you see I need some.I will continue my seach for knowledge.Well this was just to tell a little about me.If nothing else wish me luck please.
ty sincerly,

James

Hey,

when you have trouble with code in the book, why not post your questions about on this forum? That way we can help you out when you need it. Just make sure to post the code that you've tried, along with what you don't understand about it.

Do you understand general programming concepts like variables and functions, for example? This is a good place to start, in my opinion.

Also, another book may help. Don't give up on books yet. I'll see if I can find a good introductory-level Java book for you.

Arrow Wrong Choice

jamesdman,
I think you just choose the wrong book!
Better get an (Introduction) type of book other than the (crash course) type..
me personally i used this book I thought it was v.good
(Java: An Introduction to Computer Science and Programming, Third Edition by walter Savitch)
Also there is a 4'th edition of this same book... shop around before you but another book..
Amazon link to 3'rd edition
Amazon Link to 4'th edition
Some description of the book
Why do i feel like a sales man

ty

well the problem is much more the codes and such.it the words.i dont know what half of them mean when it comes to computers.the book i bought said it was for beginners.i guess i should of gotten a dictonary first.
the reason i chose java is simple.i have a distant friend who knows a few languages. i ask him if he could only use and learn 1 language what would it be.he said java.im not sure exactly what he does but i know he makes a good living at it.he gets contracts and usualy only works about 1/2 the year and makes better money then i do at the factory working 60 hour weeks year round.i was playing an online game until here recently when i first reliezed that it wasnt very productive. i thought i needed to do something that could actualy improve myself at.like i said before im 27 and a real noob at pc's only haveing one for 2 years and it was my first time ever useing one.and what i need realy is a dictonary with computing terms in it.it dos me no good to read a book with words i dont understand and have no way to look up.i went back to the book store (barnes and noble)and i didnt find any such books.or any books with a short dictonary in the back.ty for replying with willingness to help.btw i read much more then the first three chapters but didnt comprhend anything at all after the third.

cool.

Normally, you can go to Google and type:

define: theWord

in their search box and it will bring up the definition of theWord... so that may help ya out a bit.
