Ubuntu has firefox installed by default. Go to the applications menu. Check out the programs.

Connecting to the internet: What sort of internet connection do you have? Cable? It should do it automatically. If it doesn't, you need to post on their forums about it. It's probably not bringing up your ethernet card.

DSL?

Dial up?

Details man.

Almost forgot. What applications do you use on Windows? We can tell you an alternative to them all. Want to know how to install software? Read how to use apt-get or Synaptic.

Ubuntu has a lot of documentation. Read it. They also have a good irc channel. Use it. They have a good forum. Post on and search through it.

just let it be known that if you want to compile and install any software, you will need to download the gcc compiler. ubuntu doesn't come with it already installed, which is retarded. i spent a hell of a lot of time trying to figure out why none of my 'make install' commands ever worked.

in the terminal, type "apt-get install build-essential" (i think that's the command) to get gcc. you'll probably need it later

Okay.

I was going to do a dual-boot with Fedora and XP, but if you all can recommend some programs that will actually match up to my needs, it would be great to fully run Linux on my machine.

ConTEXT - Highlighted, Tabbed Browsing Text Editor
Cool Edit Pro - Audio Editing and Recording Software, also known as Adobe Audition
FlashFXP - The only FTP I've ever been happy with.
Limewire - Music Downloading Program, Mainly
Nero - For burning CD's
WinAmp - MP3 and Digital Video Player
Zend Studio - PHP Editing
Photoshop - Industry Standard for 2D Graphic Design
Microsoft Word - Word Processor

With those, or perfect alternatives, I should be able to make it fine with Linux.

Regards,
Yuneek

Windows Linux Description
 ---------------------------------------------------------------------------
ConTEXT GVIM (Graphical VI Text Editor)
Cool Edit Pro Audacity (Sound editor)
 FlashFXP kBear (FTP Client)
 Limewire xMule (P2P File Sharing)
 Nero k3b (KDE CD-Burning)
 WinAmp XMMS (X Multi-Media System)
Zend Studio GVIM (Graphical VI Text Edtor)
Photoshop GIMP (GNU Image Manipulation Program)
Microsoft Word OpenOffice.org Writer (Advanced Text Editor)

Those should work, that's my opinion anyway. Other people might have different opinion on what is best in some cases... i'm not really sure about audacity... but besides that everything else should be cool.
