About Visual J#

I'm in the process of trying out and asking questions about different Java tools. I have a couple of questions about Microsoft's Visual J#:

1. Why do they call it J#? Is it similar to their C# language?
2. Can I write simple console programs with Visual J#(that's probably what I will be doing for awhile)?

J#, in my opinion, is the result of microsofts need to corrupt anything and everything they can. It isnt java, its an evil disfigured half-breed that is useful to nobody.
The only real "Java tools" come from Sun. Also check out Eclipse, as its a very popular IDE, and its really the only Java-related thing i use that doesnt come from Sun.
