one more thing
i have found numerous sites where they will host your domain for free but you have to register the domain first which makes sence
anyway all the "free" sites i go to you have to pay to register the domain
so now the question is where can i register a domain for free?

nope. Not since the 80's :-P

atleast not that i know of. However, before you spend money shop around cause not all registars charge the same. Some are 50 a year, others are 14 a year. As far as free hosting, do a google search for "free hosting", there are hundreds if not thousands.

Just Download Apache from Apache.org. It comes with a basic config file that you shouldn't need to edit but you can. some more info is on their site. It works bettter than the Microsoft server thing and its free!! I would recomend putting aside a box just to run apache. Oh, and you should really run it under windows 2000 or something. Don't run it under windows 98 or lower, it won't work correctly. Just make shure you install all the service packs or just use some form of UNIX. (i use windows 2000, its fine for what i need, and easier)

Run it under linux.

MS is bad and costly, linux is good and free, as in "free beer".

as for the domain no matter what if you want that you will have to pay for it. i get my domains at godaddy.com and they charge 8 or 9 bucks per year for a domain so thats pretty good price. as for hosting you can host from your own home i have done it before and it is easy. once you know your ip address you just set that as your ip in your dns settings in your cp of what ever registar you use to register your domain

if you are goin to use windows to host your site. i recommend using this
http://apache2triad.sourceforge.net/
it is apache, mysql, and php all bundled up into one install and what not and works great when i was playing with it good luck

I am going to say this, all the damn time: Never use IIS.

The Code Red worm successfully destroyed any and all faith I had in the Microsoft Server technologies, plus they take forever to get patched. While Apache is open source and free, and errors get fixed in 1/100th MS programs get fixed.

Just get Apache, set up support for some dynamic scripting, and use a free DNS host like No-IP.com or DYNDNS.org and you'll be all set.
