You don't have to pay anything. If you have a static IP... install Apache... and type
http://localhost... others would have to type in http://your.ip

If you want a name instead of the IP, go to link's in Mad Guy's post. That's where I originally started, then I switched over to my own domain with GoDaddy.com.

hey

ill give you free subdomain of flibflob.com if you like, thats if youve got static IP.

then you can type in yourname.flibflob.com and that will load up your website hosted on your computer. you'd need to run apache with PHP and configure it all on your own computer but it wont cost anything and you'll have a working setup with a easy to remember subdomain.

Private message me if youre interested or add me to your msn list

I've always wondered how does domain registration actually work? What prevents duplicates?

They're all registered with a central company. In the US, that would be InterNIC.

in your web browser!

Apache is a web server program that is free. All you need to do is install the windows version and it runs as a system service. You stick your web files in the htdocs folder and hey presto when you access: http://localhost on a web browser (on the machine you installed apache on) youre site comes up!
