How many people...
want to make programming their life? I mean seriously, screw college. Why go if you're not going to do anything anyway? I'd rather just go to a programming/computer science college and learn more about programming and develop my game than to go to college and party all the time.
Don't most people make their life stable at about 30 years old? Get what I'm saying, most people are 30 years old before they get a really decent job and get their life officially started. Hell, I'm 16 now, I might as well study c++ till im 25 then develop something, cause I'm definately up for the challenge. Just thought I'd throw that out in the open. Please, respond with your thoughts. I just want to hear other people's opinions. Gardon |

While you can pursue a career without a college degree, you would have an easier time starting a successful career with one. Even if you don't learn anything, which is highly unlikely, the benefit to your resume is worth the time spent.

I'm 16 and i have a job where iwork around computers, and make alot of good connections with people in the Department of Defense, what's really relevant in the computer world is skills. A degree helps, but if you have the skills and the experience to prove them there's not much a degree can do to match it.

You youngens have alot to learn yet...lol I was 17 when i got my first that was being in the Marines, for Compters, writing programs for snipers to find their targets. I was 23 when i got out and started working for NASA. Now i create security prgrams for them. Not to mention i create MUDs in my spare time kinda like my hobby. Now how could i achieve all of this before i turned 25?. Cause i made the right choices and chased my dreams. So yes i would advise you youngens to goto college doesn't have to be right away, hell take a few years off but not too many. Then chase after what you want to do early. Just keep in mind. The more money you make while your working. The more money you'll get when you retire...lol Thats always my motivation.

This is the story my dad keeps telling me:
To get a job with a company you have to get past the human resources folks (HR). They go by the book! A job description for a beginning programmer has a requirement of a college level study in computer science, finishing with a BS or MS degree. If you don't have this, tough luck! These folks won't even consider you, even if you would be an absolute genius! They won't bother to test you for equivalency. Your application ends up in the circular file. Basta! So, when I finish high school, off to college I go! |

If you guys do want to be a programmer go to college and get a degree, like Dietrich said, the HR people won't even consider you unless you have a BS or AS (even hard with an AS, just ask BigK) I personally went to college for a year for computer programming, found out its not what I want to do, i'm still out of college debating what I want to do, but if programming is your thing, do the right thing and go to college and get a degree, heck even if you don't use your programming degree, you have a degree and can get into places still
