For a free compiler, almost everyone here would suggest Dev-C++.

I use Visual Studio .NET. Some of the compilers work differently (minor), but they should overall do the same thing.

I think it uses a version of the GNU C compiler? Anyways, I found it far less irritating than anything else I have tried. So I say go for it.

Or use Linux!

Smile

Download the Dev-C++ 5.0 beta 9 (4.9.9.1) (7.6 MB) with Mingw/GCC 3.3.1

It is well behaved, takes up minimum disk space, and above all it is free. You can donate to the Bloodshed team, if you like, to encourage them to do more nice stuff.

I use it a lot! For a good help file on C++ you may want to go to the Borland site.

www.cplusplus.com has some of the basics

You're best bet is to buy a book for C++. You can't just learn from reading though.

Definatly take Dietrich's advice, i am a big fan of Mingw and GCC. The lasr time i used bloodshed was long, long ago, and i think it was using a version of Borland's compiler, which i find to be highly.... odd.
Good luck!
