Hello,
I am majoring in computer engineering. right now we are learning how to user Rational Rose in my c++ class. i find it a waste of time, but my question is do people in the professional world really use it? If not how do professional programmers go about planning their applications and such.

I am also assuming that a lot of people in this forum program for a living. What is an average work day for a computer/software engineer?

I'm only an intern but it's a lot more laid back then what we were taught in college, at least where i work. Software engineering class right? The main important thing you will get out of this class is documentation, you will need that.

I haven't had to use any type of software to plan my projects, i'm sure some companies insist on it but where i work it's a small team, 7 app developers, basically we just have long meetings to discuss how we are planning to go about doing things and then work it out as we go.

I can't say if a lot of people do it this way but that's all i've experienced of the field thus far.

We're basically assigned small projects at a time where usually there isn't much confusion as to how to go about doing things.

I'd imagine this is more for critical systems design or for very large systems where you can't afford to go back and make changes as you get deeper into the project.
