Different colors

I was in Chicago, IL (US) back in March... I was wanting to go into Canada but I had to attend meetings the entire week... that sucked. I would like to go back out that way sometime next year. Maybe then I can get some of that multi-colored money

these days i would much rather have a job that you needed a "certificate of ignorance", like a job where you just sit there and watch money come out of a hold every five minutes. B)

I'll have to look Brandon up next time I'm out that way... went to a club in Chicago called The Excalibur, it was pretty bad ass.

Sounds like you are like me, we need to write some AI that will do our jobs for us so we can go home and only show up at the office for meetings and upgrades to the AI prog. lol

Speaking of AI, is anyone currently pursuing projects in this area?

Secure programming is definatly a very relative term.. I am appauled (sp?) by the number of people I have worked with in the past though that pay no attention to security what so ever.

One past admin I had the misfortune of working with about 1 year ago, who was the manager for several publically accessed server was made known of several vulnerabilities in the process of my working with him.

During that time period their system were compromised twice that they knew of, in both occasions their only reaction was to bring to court the persons responsible and NEVER actually fix the errors... well I think they went as far as to change the root passwords once--which was good.

Our patching process is fairly automated... with scripts and databases. There are only 2 people manning this system for the entire user base (consisting of 40000+ users). Sometimes there are glitches, or patches that are deliberately not installed due to conflicts in our configurations and policies. So no one person can "hammer" the system.

I think I would have fired the guy that you spoke if, if I were in the position to do so?

I was not, I was contracted.. and sadly he was the most educated person there.. which really frightened me. I learned in two week PHP what he learned in about 2 years... but what bothered me most of all were his blatent disregards to the security flaws present in there systems.

Suffice to say that this guy was fired from 2 of his previous jobs, and last I heard from an old friend who now has a job as a business person at the office, there was interest in getting him out. But that is a different topic

The point here is that there seem to be a lot of people who just do not care about security issues... but since security is a small aspect of what I consult.. perhaps it helps me a bit (?). As a contractor with a supposedly limited account on the system, I had full access to all databases, passwords, and email accounts for all 10,000 users in their database... not cool for them.
