well i retryed the send the output of the awk command to a text file in my home directory on the server and now it works like a charm thanks for all your help on this

now i need to find out a way to use vb to find out the persons user name on there workstation and then use that as there username on the server so that it will write the file to there home directory and not to the main directory where the awk script is running cause that would be bad to have the program creating and re-writing the same file if a bunch of ppl are accessing it at the same time
if you have any ideas let me know if i get this before someone tells me i will post how i did it

no i use it, but i could just "give" you a copy....hehe an since we live so close to each other, mailing you some cd's should only take a week at most....just because of customs.
