Number Systems...

Hi guys haven't been around for ages. How is everyone???

Anyways, first time I've done this, but I need help with my homework!

One of the questions about numbering systems is.....

"With 8 bits what is the maximum number that can be represented?"

Am I right in thinking that this would mean the Binary number 11111111, the octal number 7777 7777 and the hexidecimal number FFFF FFFF?

I'm not asking for people to do it for me just need a little help, I can programe, but that's about it and this is Computer Systems!

cheers guys
Ade

Just the binary number, not the octal or the hex. A bit is only a 1 or a 0 and can't represent octal or hex directly. (Another way to look at it is 2^8 - 1).

377 in octal and FF in Hex. Bits are usually binary, as mentioned above.

The maximum number of bits in 8-bit binary is 255, or 11111111....FF....377...
