VS 2005 / 2008 Express on Wine

I am trying to install VB 2005 Express on my Mac and would like to know if it has been tested on Wine or Codeweavers? Their sites do not show any info. Also, is it compatible with Mono? I can seem to find any info for my questions.

Trust me, you do not want to simulate Windows to run a Microsoft IDE. Even if you get it to launch, it will be very slow and crash often. You can, however, either install Windows on a partition of your hard drive and boot into it via Boot Camp (free), or use Parallels Desktop or VMware Fusion (both are around $80) to run Windows in a window without rebooting. All of these options require a copy of Windows (preferably XP); if you are a student you may be able to get it for free through the MSDNAA program at your school.

VB 2005 Express is not a .NET application, so you cannot use Mono to run it. In addition, Mono implements only a limited subset of Windows' .NET implementation so you would not be able to run it even if it were a .NET application.

You may be able to get it to work with Wine or Codeweavers. As I said, even if you do the result will probably not be what you expect. However, I may be wrong since I haven't tried it.

I will try it with Wine or Codeweavers. I need Express for a course and would prefer not to rely on the Univ's labs. Thanks.

Try VirtualBox if you want a complete free virtual machine.

Also consider sharpdevelop which is a free .NET IDE with arguably more features than the Express Editions Microsoft provide. And I beleive it runs in mono ok.

Why don't you use MonoDevelop instead? If not, then just use Boot Camp. It will make life easier than trying to run VB.NET Express in Wine @_@.

Re: VS 2005 / 2008 Express on Wine

I find Visual Studio to be the best when working with .NET or windows programming in general. Even the Express version is decent. But running that on Wine, c'mon. Wine can't run a game of tetris without erring, you can't possibly expect Visual studio to run flawlessly. If you insist on not using Boot Camp, I would go with Game_Ender's suggestion and use VirtualBox to set up a windows VM with VS.

Thanks for the info guys, I have installed VB 2005 Express on VPC for now but will look into the others, particularly Mono.
