the upcoming C++ standards

Wikipedia article.
I just want to know what people think of these new standards for C++. Some of my programming buddies are scared of it.

Some people are scared of change. Others are scared of what they don't understand. I think the new standard will be a nice improvement.

Re: the upcoming C++ standards

My personal opinion is that there is a fair way to go before C++0x will be a useful standard.

Several proposed features are well thought out, and offer considerable benefits.

However, there are also some proposals that are not particularly well though out. There is at least one proposal (and it is listed on that wikipedia page) I'm aware of that seeks to take an existing weakness of the C++ standard and make it an even greater weakness. Some proposals are quite subtle, and it is yet to be seen if those subtleties will be problematical in the real world. Some proposals are simply gilding the lily.

In other words, there is nothing particularly unusual about the development of this standard.

Haven't read up on the standard yet, but it reminded me about how I wish I went to listen to Bjarne Stroustrup talk @ my university last year.

As i said, I didn't go. I did hear good things from friends. There was an open Q&A thing afterwards which apparently was entertaining.

I'm going to apply to UW for EE and it's looking to be my first choice. Mostly because of things like that.

The new standard is expected to be out in 09 -- but compiler's probably won't catch up until about 2020! So I'm not going to hold my breath waiting for it.
