VirtualBox

Just trying this. It allows you to run Linux and Windows on a machine at the same time without duel-booting or partitioning. You can switch between the two without losing any data or rebooting in three seconds flat! Also allows you to store data in both OSs onto disk... Sorry I can't go into more detail - I'm in a big rush!

I think it's brilliant. What do you guys think?

I've been using it for months, I really like it and have run into more or less zero issues. Of course VMWare Server is also free but I have to admit having used both I much prefer VirtualBox.

Xen is interesting. The ability to move guests between hosts while only pausing them for tens of milliseconds is just incredible. I think VMWare ESX server can do that as well.

I bet the hardware takes quite a hit to do that though

Yeh - I'm nowhere near an expert on it yet but I've been using it for a day now and think it's well worth it!

I'd definitely recomend it!

I haven't tried this, but I have heard of Microsoft Virtual PC, I know a couple of my friends use it. But I haven't asked them about.
Anyone know what it's like.

I tired it and found that it slowed down my performance quite a bit. I'd be interested to hear what your friends thought though...

Microsoft Virtual PC isn't nearly as fast or stable as VMWare. Personally I think using these virtual machines for purposes other than testing is stupid. Virtual machines take a huge hit in performance, so if you are using a different OS that much where you always have the VM running, set up a dual boot or get another machine. VM's become useful when it comes to testing and installing software, because you can always test on a fresh system and if it breaks, you can just reload the VM image.

Yeah, I am a sad case who has two computers, one with LINUX, one with XP. I have never used LINUX in a virtual environment and now considering my options now after finding out about Virtual Environments.
So, I see that if I was to go for a virtual environment, Virtual Box may be the answer.
