Network Two Homes

So here is the problem:

I'd like to network two homes together that are less an a mile from eachother (More like ~800 feet). There isnt a direct line of sight due to several tree's being in the way.

Each home has it's own internet connection, but we'd like to merge the networks to share 1 data server.

I posted here so see if anyone had any idea's or advice, I'll add more details later, but i wanted to get this idea rolling around in some heads of people who could help. Thanks.

CAT5 Cable won't work, you could run a fiber optic cable....

How about using something like Hamachi?

Well the issue with running cables, is price more than anything. To do those right, I'd want to put them underground and protected from the elements. Same with fiber.

Hamachi would work, but due to the large amounts of data being transfered, the internet connections at both the locations are just too slow.

If you have the money you could always go with a VPN server and client. Sure it wont be as fast as being in an internetwork, but it would still work. You could try Radio waves. Or see if you can cut the trees down and put in a microwave system.

Sneakernet! Surely you could just invest in a hard drive enclosure and walk/drive the entire 15/100 of a mile when needed?

I think the way we are going to try to go with is the 15.4 dBi Comet Omni Antenna and see the distance it will cover.

The distance is not going to be the issue ghost, the issue is going to be whatever is in the middle blocking the signal.

That said, it really does depend how bad the tree issue is, if one of you sits on the roof with a flash light turning it on and off, can the other see it?

Even then, it may not be as big of an issue as you might think, whilst interference from Trees and leaves might cause signal degradation, there is every chance that it could just result in a slow down.

There are lots of sources of info on creating your own wireless antennas, you can make a 12-18+ dbi antenna for around $10 worth of parts, providing you can get an old galaxy star antenna for free somewhere (here in Aus, thats easy as our PayTV provider used to use them, so most houses have them still on the roof and are not using them)

tAK, I do see your point and I believe that the trees in the way will only cause the connection to be a little slower than normal. I'll try to post what I've done once it has been finished.

Thanks again.

You might also reconsider getting a omni antenna, try a directional.
