Website design rates and fees

Hi again,

The ol' Prm is back, done with school for a little while yet.

I've had a few offers on designing and maintaining websites for various people in my area, and I am thinking about advertising a bit to see what business I can scare up.

I know some of you regulars here do web design on a professional basis - and I was hoping you might give me some guidelines on what sort of fees or rates I can reasonably charge for work.

Someone told me that I should charge by the hour and keep track of all time spent on working on a website. Is this a good idea?

I really do not know what sort of prices I would be looking at, because I've never really done web design and maintenance for money before. All of my clients have been volunteer jobs.

Hopefully you can point me in the right direction on what I need to set up before I start doing work for profit.

Thank you!

I currently have four clients and I usually charge by the hour depending on what has to be done and what it takes to get it done as well. I also keep a log of what things were done to the site. I always show the client first what needs to be done and give them a summary how long it will take and how much it will cost them to do the updates.

You might also want to consider having a limited number of revisions and anything after that is extra money.

If it is a website from the beginning or an addin such as an Admin panel to have all the text on the pages managed through a database, I change per project. That way it give the benefit to the client. Then again I just started a year ago and can be slow sometimes. If you want to "charge by the hour" then think of how many hours it will take you, and then come up with a price for that and be like, "It will be $xx total and it will take me Y amount of days". If you get stuck and you can't remember how to do something, should you be the one that loses money or the Client?
