In my opinion, both Netbeans and Eclipse are very good IDE's. I cannot say which one is better. I personally prefer Netbeans, but the other guys I work with prefer to use Eclipse. We all use Maven 2.0 to manage our builds, however.

Yes for noobs. But has no intellisense. Eclipse and intellij idea both were elected the best ides, dont know the years.

Theres NetBeans 5.0 BlueJ edition: http://edu.netbeans.org/bluej/ I would say looks pretty ideal. Not tried it yet though.

I have to agree with Pegasus: Eclipse and IntelliJ are my favourites, though I currently use Eclipse... IntelliJ costs money, y'see.

I use vi. I'm on java and php and a little of perl, we're into sms apps/mobile apps. Now I'm using zend studio just for a try. Its not free but it supports:
java,perl javascript,php,xml
Features: intellisense,instant debugging,tunneler,database utility
supports(mysql,mssql,oracle), code documentor etc

I love JCreator and Eclipse. The Intellisense is great to have for an IDE but I tend to rely on it a lot. I am more productive on Eclipse than JCreator but asking me to rewrite a program I did in Eclipse on JCreator, I'd be in trouble!

I have been using Netbeans 5.5 for a couple of months now and have not experienced any memory issues or slowness from the IDE. In fact, when I compare Netbeans 5.5 and Eclipse 3.2 in the task manager, each takes up about the same amount of memory.

IntelliJ IDEA, but it rapes your CPU, literally. It's a heavy ass program, but good for big projects. Eclipse is ok. Netbeans.. ewe.. well I use it for GUI sometimes. (I get lazy with swing)

well i am using Netbeans5.0 for now, thanks for all the suggestions, Eclipse is what i will use but NetBeans is easier to learn from, since i have 2GB of ram the memory is not a problem. IntelliJ is free? if it is, then i will get it. my cpu is overclocked and fast so that wont be a problem either...
