I hope this is the right forum for this...
Hi all, I hope everyone is well. ![]() Ok, I don't know how to explain this properly, so I'll just struggle along & if you need anything clarified, please ask. First, I'd like a quote from only very experienced MySQL/PHP programmers on how much this appl. will cost to build. I know you need to see the specific DB outline, so I'll need you to sign an NDA. If the price is too high, I will either go elsewhere, or have to do it in stages. Second, I need to know if I can do what I want to do, so I'm looking for someone who thinks outside the box. Ok, here goes... I plan to develop an application that my customers can use to run the backend of their web sites. This appl. will kind of be like a dating site (but it's not) where the customer can upload pics in various different arraignments (like 4 across & 4 down etc. & there will be different designs for them to choose from) there will also be a calender is set in place etc. The appl. is run by my customer so they can make things visiable on their site to their customers. So, it has to be really user friendly, like a dating site. Some of the data they will be able to see & only use for their own admin. purposes & other data their customers will be able to see & it will look all nice & a finished product. Here in lies the question/problem... I had one programmer tell me that this application could be hooked up to someone else's already existing site so they can continue to use their own site, hosting company etc. I think she mentioned a landing page or something like that to make it work. That was b4, when I was going to sell the appl. Then we changed our minds & decided we would rent out the appl. with different tiers costing different prices of course. I want to make sure that my customer doesn't need to download anything & they can just plug n play after an acct. has been set up for them. Now I'm being told by different programmers that the appl. can't be clicked into place on someone's already existing site, They said that my customer would have to purchase a whole new web site template that was already designed to work with this appl. Is this b/c I'm not longer selling the DB, but rather renting it out? Can anyone come up w/ a way around this b/c I'm not sure my customers are going to want to give up their already existing site just to use this appl. They may also not want to change hosting companies since I guess I'll be acting as their hosting company too b/c their web site will be run thru my server. Please get back to me either by PMing me, e-mailing me. I don't have a problem w/ you posting here, so long as I am notified that there's a message here. Thanks so much & have a great wknd. ![]() Michelle

So if i understand this right, you'd have an non-web app (one that gets run from the desktop, not a website) that lets the user adjust some settings from anywhere for their website. So when a person goes to their section of the website they will see the updated content. In theory it's totally posible to have an app that connects to the backend of a website (the database) and lets the user update the content. It gets even easier to do if your connecting to the same db all the time, and it gets even easier if the content is going to be formatted the same way all the time (like having 5 presets to choose from).

***nope, this will be run from my server, not a desktop. that lets the user adjust some settings from anywhere for their website. ***Yes, they would just log in w/ their user name & p/w So when a person goes to their section of the website they will see the updated content. ***Hmm, I hope I understand your question correctly. The backend is to keep information, like who is working today, tomorrow & every day (that's for the calender). Their customers will then see this info on the calender that's on their web site. Their administrator also needs to see details about each worker that may or may not be seen by their customers, but needs to be seen by the administrator as they are doing their work. Does that make sense? Sorry, but I'm being vague here for a reason. In theory it's totally posible to have an app that connects to the backend of a website (the database) and lets the user update the content. It gets even easier to do if your connecting to the same db all the time, ***Remember that each customer's DB has to be seperate from every other customer's DB b/c that's private info. and it gets even easier if the content is going to be formatted the same way all the time (like having 5 presets to choose from). ***not sure what presents are, although I can hazard a guess. The DB will be the same for all of my customers, but depending on what package they pick, they may have 5 features where the higher priced package will have 10 & so on. So, the DB should stay the same & then when we want to implement new features, it will be across the board to that one specfic package or all of them, depending on the feature. My concern is how to deal with this if the person already has a web site & just wants to connect to my appl. Can you answer that? LOL Thanks Michelle

How come I wasn't notified when you responded to this thread
![]() I got an e-mail from you, but it was more like an e-mail, then a thread notification. I had to go searching for the thread too b/c there was no link directing me to the thread. Thanks Michelle

Because when you post on a forum, it's your responsibility to keep track of your posts, not anyone elses. If you click on My Assistant at the top, you'll see a link to topics you started.

K. Regarding the email notification everytime someone replies to a thread, I agree with you... it would be a pain.
If threads are particularly interesting to you, you could always bookmark them and visit them at your leisure to check for responses. That would eliminate the need for K to look into the forum configuration and the need for your "2 additional steps".

You can setup so that every time sombody replys to your thread it will send you an email with the link it. I have it, and it works great. All you have to do is play with the settings in your control panel (under the my controls link on the top right corner).
