how much math?

how much math (or many maths for some of you...inside joke, never mind---maths is not a real word...hahahahahahahaha).

screw my retardedness, how many math classes do you have to take to graduate with a CS major?

please give course prefix and number (ex: MA 161 calculus I)...just to see the first number.

at emporia state university we have to take:

MA 161: calculus I
MA 240: discrete mathematics
MA 262: calculus II
MA 322: linear algebra
MA 380: probability and statistics

and 4 more (classes) would get me a dual degree. is this load about right?

At Texas A&M, for a CS major you have to take:

Math 151 -- Calculus I
Math 152 -- Calculus II
Math 251 -- Calculus III
Math elective
Stat 211

Being an out-of-date ol' fart, I have no idea. Those sound useful, though. You may look askance at the probability and statistics, but I daresay that a few years down the road you may find it to be the most useful thing of all. Every one of those things will be useful to you beyond CS, as they can help you make sound business decisions in the face of many alternatives.

i was going to do calc III this semester, but my advisor let me do an independant study...i'm not sure which would have been better.

my dad (monte hancock), who is on his second book on data mining says that linear algebra is the most used math in his area of work. when i was little he used to come home talking about things in 17 dimensions...now my wife gives me the same blank stare i gave him years ago when i talk about this stuff.

and why does everyone think CS guys know about plasma tv's and shit like that? i'd like to HAVE one, but i'm more interested in the IDEAS behind making one...until then, i can watch "the unit" on my old 27" CRT tv.

MATH140: Calculus I
MATH141: Caculus II
One 400 level Statistics course
One Math course where Calc II is a prerequisite. The most commonly picked are:
MATH240: Linear Algrebra (required by some 400 level CS courses)
MATH241: Calculus III (required by some 400 level CS courses)
MATH246: Differential Equations

And cryptology requires two 400 level math courses (looks like I wont be taking cryptology)

Dang, I had your MAT 221 as a senior in high school, but then, I'm an ol' fart.

Edit: Oops, didn't look first.

MAT 21A - Calc 1
MAT 21B - Calc 2
MAT 21C - Calc 3
MAT 22A - Linear Alg
MAT 22B - Diff Eq
MAT 108 - Stats (I think..?)
Plus 2 more electives.

Looks like a bunch, but this is at UC Davis, and those are quarter classes, not semester.

Looks pretty standard, everybody has to take at least Calc series plus some DiffEqs

At Cal Poly SLO (Quarter classes):

CSC 141 (Discrete Mathematics)
MATH 141 (Calculus I)
MATH 142 (Calculus II)
STAT 321 (Probability and Statistics for Engineers and Scientists)
MATH/STAT Elective (x2)

Calculus III is apparently not required, but I'm going to take it anyway.

Here at U of Washington, you gotta have MATH 124-126 (Calc. 1-3) to apply to the CS dept. I took those in high school though :p

After that, math reqs are very little:
MATH 308 (Matrix Algebra)
STAT 390 or 391 (Stats for science or computer science (more specific))

Lots of people around here take an extra 3 classes I think it is for a math minor, and there's also several who double-major (since a few of the 400 level math classes can be counted as CS senior electives).

Oh, and we're quarter-based here too if it matters.
