512 has always been enough for me no matter how many apps I have open. I suppose if you're trying to code while playing the latest 3D games and editing audio and having your computer give grandmaster analysis of a chess game and....

But for normal people 512MB is enough.

I plan to buy another 512 to make it 1 gig.

By the way, with the said specs, do you think it can run Vista when it comes out...? I've heard some people say that for you to run Vista, you'll need a high-end computer, but if you take a closer look, the my machine SHOULD be able to run even Home Advanced, except of course for the 1 gig memory..

Vista will run on it, but wait until its released before you make your mind up to buy it or not. It will probably run much slower than xp on your hardware so i would not bother with it. Also it wont be cheap so your money would be better spent on memory.

You also need a DriectX 9 card to run the aero user interface , and your GeForce MX440 is only a DirectX 8.1(i think) compatible card so vista will revert to the basic(much less eye candy) theme.

I'm curious to see how Vista will run. I know you can download it and all, but I want to see the final release. I highly doubt I will buy it. Seems like there will be too much crap in it. As with your specs, VS2005 will run, but don't expect it to be blazingly fast. If that's the case, I wouldn't upgrade to vista until you upgrade the hardware.

Don't people speak Tagalog in the Philippines? Your English is quite good.

No, the gpu can run it; I checked using DxDiag, and it says 9.0c.

I also read from MaximumPC that MS is planning to release DirectX 10. I saw the difference from 9 to 10 when MPC used MS Flight Simulator, and it was a really big step forward. The clouds now can be mistaken to be real clouds.

Thanks, uman.

Yeah, the filipino tongue is Tagalog, but I was raised being taught English, because both my parents came from a different province, and since they both have different dialects, they could communicate only with English then.

By the way, your computer specs aren't really different from what most people have here in the United States. I think everyone (except billionaires) can agree that computer hardware is way too damn expensive.

Without going far far off topic. DxDiag will tell you which version of DirectX is installed, not which version of DirectX that the card supports. The MX 440 is only DirectX 8.1 card. Most games however come with ability to use DX9 if the card can support it or use DX 8.1 if the card is older, so most people dont notice the difference.

There are no DX10 cards out yet. Vista will come with DX10, but you have to have a card that supports DX9 to run all the fancy gui extras. If you use a DX9 card under vista it wont use DX10 features either. So unless you get a DX10 card, Flight Sim will still have the same level of graphics it would have under XP and DX9. Vista running on your card will only have the basic UI theme. I hope that clears that up

Edit- If you look at this pdf on the MX440 on the second page under API support it will say its only a DirectX 8.1 card.

http://www.nvidia.com/object/LO_20020204_8254.html

That means it does not support DirectX 9. Not even newer drivers make it work with DX9. Its the actual GPU chip that does not have the DX9 functionality. So if you want fancy graphics with Vista you will need a more modern card.

Ahh, I see....
Geeze, Microsoft's gonna drain everybody's money when they launch Vista...So what else is new from Bill Gates?

Anyway, I don't believe I'm going to do anymore upgrades this year, except for the memory though...

This is one of the funniest things I've ever heard. Without intending the response to be flammable, I have to say that it's the result of a (quite natural) lack of perspective.
