I've considered dumping Norton this year for many reasons including settings randomly switching, firewall blocking web browsers, and performance degradation. I was curious what you guys thought of Pc-Cillin Internet Security.

I tossed Norton last year, after using it since before it was Symantec. I switched to PC-Cillin. I'm extremely satisfied.

Never used it but here is what i use. AVG free edition and the windows firewall. AVG does what it says on the tin, it auto updates, it does not slow the system down and it stops virus and even has a email scanner. The windows firewall is not too bad. If you dont have xp then there is ZoneAlarn free edition that works quite well.

I used to have Norton but i did not like how it went about bugging me all the time and how it slowed everything down. McAfee is not too bad and if you want a solid commercial solution its quite good. There are others included AVG which i think are execlent.

Norton may catch malicious/unwanted things creeping onto your computer, but in my experience found that, as you say, it lags the system to a crawl, switches settings randomly, and in general (IMO) is a really front-heavy piece of shit. Mcafee, though a better experience for me than Nortan, still sucks, once again its memory heavy among a few other disadvantages.

Random Spirit mentioned AVG Free Edition, this, I feel is a good anti-virus with a no hassle interface, you install it, set your prefs and that's that, it doesnt eat your system's insides either.

Personally I use F-Prot Antivirus Windows GUI version, and find that it keep's me clean as a student with a hand hygene OCD. With this, along with an amazing free & tiny DOS version I attempt to download viruses for fun on weekends!

I used Norton for about 1-2 years, and I'd the same problems like you guys, changing settings randomly, etc. Now I use AVG Free Edition, like Random_Spirit, it doesn't even slow my old shit of a computer.

Hail to the great AVG........zone alarm is good but i had some problems with......but i still use it because its free and also very good at its job.....i had experimented wioth Keiro Personal Firewall which is hot at the moment....but i am still with zone alarm.

A few years back I used Trend Micro Cillin, but there was something that stopped me from using it. It wasn't compatible with some other software (I forget which - maybe ZoneAlarm).

I use AVG Free now.

I'm using AVG (mainly 'cause it's free and I'm too cheap to buy something). I've heard lots of good things about NOD32 and here is some charts for them to strut around with...

I personally was not a fan of AVG, but everyone seems to sware buy it. NOD32 is very good. We still recommend Norton at work, but I'm starting to get fed up with it. We also use the Trendmicro online scanner,but ever since it upgraded, we had some problems with it getting it to run on lower end PC's.

i use two antiviruses that do not conflict, but rather work together and they are both free (im a cheap ass)

together i never miss a virus. however it is fun to manually remove on efrom your registry. teaches you a bit about the WinXP OS
