Why? Because if you went 3d, it would probably make the models look a little brighter and cartoony. That's not starcraft. That's warcraft. The "darkness" of SC is should come back. I wouldn't be too dissapointed if it was 2D. Perhaps maybe a simple rotation of the map would do. not actual 3d scrolling, but a quick change so you could see 4 different angles or something. I'm going to be ticked if that game goes "unrealistic" looking.

I see what you're saying, but they did an excellent job creating warhammer and its not bright or cartoony at all (like age of mythology or heros of might & magic for instance). I dont know about you but I'd love to see how a 3d zealot or dark templar would look.

Wrell, it's a possibility, and the chances are, they will probably go 3D. I think the many fears people have about Starcraft 2, is simply due to thefact that they want it to be a good game. They want a new game, but they want it to be the same. If that makes any sense. We don't want it screwed up, and we are worried they will.:p

Have you seen the previews for the now cancelled SC Ghost? A lot of the protoss looked very bright and cartoony, and I think that that would be where they would end up. And I don't care how another company made 3d lok dark and realistic, this is Blizzard and you have to go off of past experience with them and 3d. Besides, keeping it 2d would keep it simple and allows painless transition from the old SC games.

Do you have any idea, how many gamers there are out there that want to put their entire $2000 rig to use?

They don't want games that are 2D. They want games that will tax their GPU (3D games). So yes: the game may overall be better with 2D graphics. However, societies serious gamers buying today’s 400 dollar GPU will despise the game.

A serious gamer looks at more than just how "bleeding edge" the graphics are. In fact, that's one of my biggest pet peeves. When an 8 year old walks into gamestop, asks what this "Starcraft Game is" and it's explained to him, then he just goes "Lol, the GFX suxxors so the game is teh sux and I am l33t".
And There could be a comprimise. Same engine, but maybe make all of the units and buildings 3d. Kind of like how New Super Mario is 3d and 2d. But I think that all of the starvraft community would go to the new one if they kept the forumula the same.

I'd worry about the graphics changing too. If I want a cartoony game, well... I'll find one. I don't really like 'em though. Of course, unlike those Eric mentioned, I'm not one of the people who tries to push their computer to the limits (besides, I can only see ~24fps, why the hell do I need 100?). The only gripe I have with SC's graphics is that it only runs in 640x480 and the viewing area is too small.

And as for adding new techs and whatnot, I found SC to be a lot tougher than AoE. In AoE, the tech tree had the exact same root, only some trees blossomed differently. In SC, the trees were similar, but each one had it's own nuances (i.e. Zerg units built at the colony vs. Terran & 'toss at whatever building; 'toss and Zerg building limited to within pylons and creep vs terran wherever; all species' building names were different, looked different, and often had different upgrades/units, etc...). I never really played Zerg, and I still don't know where to build or upgrade what. The different tech trees makes the game much more interesting, but it's also more difficult to change races (and hotkey) between individual games.

Whoa... The latest Battle Net update updated the broodwar icon. Now it's all sleek and less pixelated. There has been a lot of updates to starcraft and a lot of activity in the starcraft region. This further increases my suspicion that they are working on a new SC game.
