gdi+

i wish to do some graphics with vb.net-nothing major, for (very) small games e.t.c. i have heard that this isn't the best language to do it with but any way, the two books that i have are pretty useless as they only have about 4 pages on the subject.

i was looking for tutorials but i like to have books which cover the subject. when i need to do something in programming, most of the time i end up looking it up and like to have the knowledge to hand.

in this tutorial it was going on about GDI+ and i was wondering if that was the correct/best aspect to look into from a beginners point of view.

advice on this subject would be appreciated as I am soon to be a student and don’t want to pay for the wrong book.

this is the book that i am interested in:click here

I dont really understand why you would want to call Win32 GDI+ form VB.net(im not even sure you can from VB.net), i thought System.Drawing has most of the funtionality of GDI+ and is far more staright forward to use in a .net language. Reading the synopsis it seems that really the author is teaching the System.Drawing namespace, which encapsulates GDI+.

VB.net is as good as c# for most stuff, there are some small things VB.net cant do, but its not a show stopper. Dont listen to the people who say that VB is rubbish because they mostly have experience in VB6 and that was crap. I think there is quite a lot of documentation in the .net SDK and the Express Edition of the MSDN Docs(if you use VB.net Express) for the System.Drawing namespace and you can learn alot from just following the examples. Buying a book is probably a good idea if thats they way you best learn, but nealy 30 quid for a book is quite expensive.

System.Drawing is great for 2D games, and would be a great place to start. If you are soon to be a student i would hold back on books untill the uni/college you are going to tell you the reccomended book list, at lest then you wont end up with two books on the same subject or just waste you money which could be better spent enjoying yourself next term. Last year for me i had to spend 150 quid on books, but that was not for a computing related subject.

i have to agree with you here. even though i am new to programing i have found vb.net to be very powerful.

i have found it more complex then i was expecting- i often here people say that vb is easy. i'm not stoopid (joke) and i find some concepts take while to understand.

i managed to borrow a copy of this book- click here. and to be honest it is probably more suitable. the main reason that i wanted that other book is because i have had enough of doing examples of concepts and then never using them, i figured i would learn to draw objects then create a game. hopeful this book will do more then the drawing and teach me some new code as well.

i will let you know what the book is like once i have read it.
