Java is no deader than this supposedly-dead thread. See also recent posts regarding the untimely demise of C++, Fortran, and Cobol.

They're hardly similar at all. I don't see how Ruby cool fill Java's niche.

Not even close...

Toro,

No, java is not close to being dead. Any real enterprise web development project uses either Java or .Net. It's obviously not good to put all your eggs in one basket, so most use a mix.

Most of these people replying "java sucks" are obviously dopes who yell "LAMP for life" because they saw it on Digg, and are clueless as to what major companies, and military & research organizations are doing in the real world.

Java dead....haha! It's just getting started. I think both Java and the .NET languages are staying for a while!

I wouldn't say Java's just getting started. It's over a decade old, and is one of the most common languages used in the modern software industry. I can't see it getting much bigger than it is always, so I'd say it was near its peak. But that doesn't mean that Java won't be around for years to come; popular languages never die, they simply fade away. Slowly.

When I visit my monster resume to update it, I typically get between 5-10 job e-mails and voice mails over the next 12-24 hours - 95% of which are Java development related. That's a lot of hits for a dead language.

Here is Google Trends' comparison of the search volumes for the words Java, C++, and Ruby. According to the data, Java is more than 3 times more popular than C++, and Ruby barely makes a dent. Another interesting fact that can be gleaned from the page is that these terms are the most searched for, by far, in India--can anyone "outsourcing"? (Do I have to move to India?)

On that note, Fortran code is still being maintained today. I am sure that it is being replaced moreso than maintained, but the point is that Fortran is almost 50 years old and still around. This is just to re-affirm Arevos' point that it will be around for many moons; it will probably grow in use for awhile, too, before beginning its slow ride into the sunset...

I don't believe Java is going to die, if it is, it's going to be a while... A long while.
