hmmm, I had a freebsd(5.3) workstation with kde. I think the freetype or the Microsoft True-Type fonts were necessary to get better text visualization. (either that or the matrox drivers, it has been a while). It is documented in that handbook thangy, but I am not sure if it is Gertie-ready.

After i got it set up right,the desktop graphics were excellent - crisp and clear with the matrox g400.

Check out the Bitstream Vera fonts, DaWei. Much purtier than the other ones.
