Computer VS. Electricity Bill

How does leaving a computer running 27/7 (with one restart on sunday) have an impact on the electric bill?

I haven't noticed any change. Figure it's about 5 100 watt bulbs worth. A couple more if you include the monitor.

for the home situation I can't imagine the increase is anything significant. where we hear about power consumption and all that is where people have the datacenters, where it costs them tons more money if the cpus aren't energy efficient.

It depends very much on the system. My laptop with a 950 PIII cpu, uses about 50 watts total, at idle.

My mid-tower with 100% dual core cpu utilization, uses about 255 watts, not including the monitor. One hard drive was turning (but not reading or writing). One DVD burner was part of the system, but also not being used at the time.

Shouldn't really make a big difference at all... I leave my computer running pretty much unless it needs to be restarted or I leave for a extended period of time...

I think it's around €10/month to run a computer. That's what I've read is average. It depends on the computer though obviously.

i wouldn't know, i use a "mr. fusion" (ala "back to the future") UPS. i power it with my beer cans.

no seriously, very little. just leave it on, or put it on hibernate if you want. for dorks like us, that's like worrying about the power consumption of your pacemaker.

Pacemakers take up more energy if you count in all the food consumption that you have to pay for each month...

Why bother leaving your computer on at night anyway?
