media player

Hi all.I am a university student and i am thinking to start creating a serius project.I thought to make a media player that can play media steams such as mp3 and mpeg files.Any good suggestion to start with like what programming language it's suitable or what else will be needed?

Python with PyGTK and PyMedia?
Java (or Nice, or Scala, or Groovy) with SWT and JMF?
