Vista RAM Ussage

I recently got a new PC the came with Windows Vista Home Premium 64-bit edition. The specs of the PC are:
- Intel Quad Core Q6700
- 4 Gig of RAM
- TB of HDD space (2 500GB partitions)
- Nvidia 8600GT

I noticed right after boot it is already using about 1.1-1.2 GB of RAM (after disabling a bunch of usless services). I read that the superfetch and readyboost services take up a fair bit of ram because the cache a bunch of programs, so as a test I disables those and the RAM usage went down to about .9 GB of RAM being used. Does anyone know if this is normal?

Vista is a memory hog, and yeah, that sounds about right. I'm not home so I can't tell you what mine is using, but I'm sure it's over a gig.

Holy **** shit... That is more ram than i have (besides virtual memory). W/o anything running (besides services) I have uh.. 280-300mb usage? I checked a while ago, but forgot what the number was xD... But i only have 512mb ram so I'm still kinda screwed xD.

On my windows xp machine i'm using about 500mb of my 1gb, and thats with a lot of crap running in the back ground. but it wouldnt surprise me if vista would use 1gb.

My Quad Core vista machine also runs at about 30% of its RAM (4gb the same as yours) immediatly after boot, its always been that way. So i would say that it is normal.

I think they're just more aggressive in Vista. I have two computers, one with 2GB and one with 4GB, and the second one uses noticeably more RAM, but approximately an equivalent percentage. Just a guess though, so long as it's not all used I tend not to worry.

Agreed, i've seen a few 2gb RAM vista boxes..they all seem to run similar percentages so. Its not really a major issue in all fairness.

Sitting idle, with 2 GB ram, mine is using 56% of the memory. Vista 64 Ultimate.

That sounds right to me.

I know that from experience as Vista will handle and chop just about RAM as you can throw at it. :-)

Looking at your system specifications I can see you have a very good machine running, but don't be put off by Vista's memory usage.
Not sure if the 64- bit edition will consume more memory though, as in your case.

Oh, and low latency RAM modules are always a winner.

Thanks for the input guys. I did a bit of more googling and Vista will caches as much as it can depending on how much ram you have to make the system more snappy. Aprrently it will free up that RAM if the system needs its. Vista using 1/4 gig doesn't bother me if it's for performance reasons.
