Network setup question
 

Alright, not a programming issue but I got a problem with my home network setup. I have a wireless network on DSL with 4 laptops and a desktop connected. I bought a network printer the other day and my problems started. The printer has to be upstairs, next to the Desktop. However, the network is downstairs making a wired connection not possible (without having a yellow cable running through the bedroom, down the stairs, into the living room..:confused:).

My question, is there a product that pickups the wireless signal and outputs it through an Ethernet cable?

there is the linksys wet200 or wet54g wireless ethernet bridge.

however your desktop could fill that role as well. i assume your desktop is connected wirelessly and i also assume that it has an ethernet port on it. if it does not have an ethernet port, a network card is probably way cheaper than the wet11 and easy to install.

connect the printer to the desktop via ethernet and then bridge the wireless and ethernet connections on the desktop.

Yes I have a wireless router downstairs. The desktop has both an ethernet port and a wireless card. It connects to the network via the wireless card.

mbd, If I follow your suggestion, wouldn't I have to leave the Desktop on all the time? I'm trying to avoid that because it's too loud.

Give us some information on the printer.

if you use the desktop to bridge the network, it would need to be running all the time unless your computer supports wake-on-lan.
