www.thefilegarage.com - the world's ultimate file sharing website!

Hello, everyone!

About a year and a half ago, i published a website called www.programminglessons.net, wich was basically a set of lessons on the c++ programming language. However, this was a complete failure. It was filled with bugs, spelling errors, innacurate information, eccetera eccetera. So i finished by removing it.
Check it out:
http://www.programmingforums.org/thread11127.html

About 1 year ago, i wiped my tears, and started learning the asp.net 2.0, and the .NET framework. As a part time web project, i decided to create a file sharing website. www.thefilegarage.com, and see how that'll do.

Well, today, the 31st january of 2008, i am celebrating the official launch of www.thefilegarage.com !! This website represents over 3 months of development ( 10 hours/week ), and im hoping it'll be a success.

Now, building and coding this website, was just one thing. After i finished making this website about 2 months ago, i was having huge unexpected problems with hosting it., mainly because all of the uploaded files are stored on a MySQL database, for easiger manatement. Initially, this is the feeatures i wanted to give to the users

200mb of web space for free users, and 1gb for premium (3.75$ monthly)
unlimitted brandwidth, no limit to maximum file size, no limit to nuumber of files that can be uploaded.

- Ability to upload and share text, videos, music, files and pictures

So i signed up with easycgi.com, however big surprise
I cant upload files bigger than 1mb to their mysql database and mysql database cant be bigger than 300 mb. So, what do i do?

Well, I decided to host all of my web files on easycgi.com, and run the mysql database server, on my personnal computer at home. Since i didnt want to bust my computer, by letting users upload 500mb movies, I had no choice but to remove some features.

Unlimitted storage ( Hard drives are cheaper and cheaper )
Unlimitted Brandwidth ( Ill let my mom handle the bills :icon_rolleyes: )
10mb file size limit, for free users, and 20 for premium users.
removed upload video feature.

I am counting on you guy's support as i am entering new ground.

Any help, suggestions, comments or questions are greatly appreciated.

Thank You very much!

I don't like it.
I suggest you to use a free web template. Then you start to edit and costomize it, and so on. You will learn how it's developed and a lot of useful information. You can integrate it with your web site, so: 1) you have a nice graphic, 2) you learn how to code, css, etc. :icon_wink:

I can't make judgement on the actual coding or server infrastructure, or anything else that happens below the surface for that matter. But as far as the visual appeal goes, as Norman said, it has a ways to go. Luckily, that's something that can be worked on easily, and it's nothing out of your reach either.

actually grim, i was curious enough about your grimbb source code that i wanted to download it. i could not download it via the pando protocol because i do not have any software which understands it. i would have downloaded it if it were http or ftp or even torrent. oh wait, the king says its the best. nevermind me.

Yes, I don't think someone should be required to download software, in order to download more software. Quite a turn-off.

i would have considered downloading pando if it were open source, but probably still would not have downloaded it. being closed source and requiring people to pay for it to get "faster" download speeds is quite a turn off.

Im glad you guy`s replied, because honestly, i thought the website looked great.
