What do you all Think about a COBOL section
I have recently started learning COBOL and wow.....It is alot diffrent from any other language that I have learned so far and is very structure sensitive language. I was wondering if anyone else would like to have a COBOL section put up.
I have yet to find a decent *up to date* book on COBOL to start with so I thought maybe others would like to have a section for it to. |
The reason that you can't find an up-to-date book is because COBOL is not up-to-date. You might make a very good living maintaining legacy COBOL. It's quite fine to discover that niche and burrow there. You will not be in the mainstream. There are some benefits to that. You will not have to endure forty-zazillion blogs written by neophytes, acolytes, and fake high-priests.
Carry your check to the bank, grinning all the way, but don't expect a lot of responses on a generic programming forum. |
Err, DaWei, not in the mainstream.
maybe Australia is a bit behind, but I have rough seven accquintences who work on COBOL systems at finanical firms, It is still very popular, they still do the usual c and java stuff but the mainframes still work on COBOL. It is still common to get COBOL jobs on IT job sites. Maybe the rest of the world is a bit more advanced. So, yes I think a COBOL section is in order for the "out of date" programmers. |
I didn't say COBOL wasn't still widely used and a place where one could make money. In fact, I said the opposite.
Perhaps you should Google up a definition of mainstream. Perhaps Kyle will make a COBOL forum. Hell, he might even lump RPG in with it. |
In the way of what's happening in australia (I don't know what's happening overseas), the jobs you apply for are JAVA C++, SQL but COBOL is in the top ten most used languages over here still. I think you would class it as mainstream in the industry.
At collage over here we learn don't learn COBOL, but their are courses for it (i think under IT Mainframe Programming). |
You might want to Google the definition of "collage" too ;).

We use to have a COBOL and RPG forum but I removed them because I was the only one who posted in them and it was pointless to keep a forum around that wasn't being used. If there ever was a large need for the forums I would add them back, but for right now they won't be added. If you have questions about them just ask them in the other programming language forum and they will get seen. Maybe just add in the title the language like COBOL: title. Something like that should be good enough for now.
Sorry but maybe some other time. |

You will find your compilers/interpreters/assemblers to be stricter regarding spelling, syntax, and semantics than any English teacher you ever had in your worst nightmares....
