Oldbie here!

Hi, folks:

I'm dutifully making my first post here introducing myself like I'm sposta.

I've been online for 24 years, and I've been running forums of my own for 20 years now. (Eeeep! Yikes! I don't *look* old; I musta been a baby when I started. Yeah! That's the ticket!) (Man; you kids prolly won't even *get* that joke.) (sigh) Back in my day, when we walked several miles through the snow uphill both ways to school, emoticons were done in ASCII, like this ;-) (ASCII is what these letters are made with, kids!) and we LIKED it like that! We didn't have any boldface, or italics, or colors, and we did just fine with it!

Hey! One thing we *did* have back then that you don't have now is backspacing and bells. That was fun: you could type "Today I was talking with that assho^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^H^Hmy boss" and the cursor would backspace over the letters and replace what you'd typed. You could also type ^G to make the reader's PC beep. (Oh: the caret is the Control key.) You could drive people you disliked crazy with the beeps.

Enough with the stroll down memory lane, rambling about the good ol' days; you're prolly snoozing by now anyway, huh? Enough with that nonsense.

So anyway, I currently run forum software written in Perl, and it was abandoned a couple years ago, and I'm bracing to jettison it for vBulletin, but until then, I'm still holding it together with spit, chewing gum, and teeny little mods here and there, which is why I signed up here tonight. I'm gonna go post a Perl question now, but before I do, I wanted to say "Howdy!" so I'm not rude.

PS: I really, really hate emoticons, so I hope you won't use 'em if you reply to me (*especially* that hyperactive banana on crack). I'll make a deal with you: if you don't use emoticons on me, I won't embed an R. Kelly MP3 on you. Deal?

Thanks, and I hope people here are cool!

Welcome aboard.

I, too, remember the fun abuses- err, uses- to which the ASCII 'BEL' character could be put. I also miss the good old days of DDials and STSs. :/

As for the banana, I'm in 100% agreement. It's even more annoying than when my cat paws the kitty litter over to one side of the litterbox, and then drops turds with loud 'thuds' on the exposed plastic of the box. Plop, plop!

You think you're old; I was a beta tester for Preparation A. This emoticon was my contribution: :beard:. I, too, despise the banana.

Anyway, welcome to the forum.

Well  ... I love emoticons

Anyway, Welcome :D

Why do you hate emoticons, btw

Isn't that back when Ben-Gay was still Ben-Hur? :)

I myself don't hate them in general, but they are often overused. Still, there are some- like the banana- that just annoy the fuck out of me. I suppose it's just a visceral response.
