Hp Laptop doesn`t reckognize new hd
 

Hello everybody. My girlfriend bought a hp laptop last year and now it had some hd problems. Its initial hd doesn`t work anymore and now she bought a new 100gb hd, but the problem is that when i boot to install windows it doesn`t reckognise it.

Does anyone has any ideas what should i do??????

Is it an HP recovery disk or an official copy? My brother had troubles with his HP desktop. Apparently a change in hardware can sometimes cause the recovery disks not to work. Even stuff as simple as a graphics card or hard drive being replaced. This isn't the case with all HP computers though. Try booting a Linux LiveCD and see if it will recognize the disk to be sure it isn't a hardware issue.

I think it has to do with WGA, or OEM versions being setup to only work with a specific setup...

It might need special drivers, there is an option when windows is being installed. You might also check the BIOS for any options regarding HDs.

I believe the OP is referring to an hard drive disk rather than a software disk, in which case, along with Wizards advice you may wish to check the jumpers on the disk drive - making sure they are in the right order for the disk to operate on on its current connection.

Honestly, is it a cheap model? there could very well be a limit on HDD size that the hardware will actually recognize. Some of those machines there is just no upgrading period.

I don't know what you mean by cheap, it cost $1000. And i don't think that the problem is in it's size.

The original HDD is now dead for good. The problem is that the new we bought isn't recognized by windows when i boot it.

I want to specify sth : The laptop had the windows installation in a partition, it had no windows boot cd. My girlfriend now gave the laptopto her sister husband and he says that this kind of laptop(which has the windows in a partition) needs special software from hp, which he downloaded but that also doesn't work either. Does any of you heard sth about this or he doesn't know what he is talking.

Well you can narrow out what I said by checking the Bios or even just watching on boot up. If the drive is recognized then you can move on to dealing with windows. Just wanted to be sure you weren't jumping ahead one step.

As for getting windows to recognize it, I don't have any HP computers So I don't know. I've only fixed them at work, and that's why I know that some of them are crap.

It most likeley had a recovery partition. This is stupid, because how are you supposed to repair of of a dead drive? You should be able to order a recovery cd/dvd from HP this will most likely cost you.. However you should be able to install XP from a normal CD. Consider downloading an OEM version of windows and installing that. There should be an installation key somewhere on the laptop(green sticker).
