How do you host on a linux machine?
Hi,
I'm trying to run Kubuntu on my desktop and was wondering how I could host my website on it rather than United Hosting. Could someone please tell me? Is Kubuntu the right distro? Thanks loads! Matt I EDIT: Not sure if this is the right place? Please could a mod move it if not? Thanks again! |
first off you need a web server application. I don't know about Kubuntu, but every linux distro I have ever loaded myself has had a web server app preloaded. Check to see what applications are included in your distro. From there out, all you have to do really is just run it and put your pages in the right place. It really is that easy sometimes. If you want PHP or mysql and stuff, it's a different story.

ahh that could be a problem.
still i can do without... what do u recon is the best distro of linux for me to use? the destop ill use it on isn't very good - about 10GB HDD if that. EDIT: Oh and thanks for the reply mate! |
I favour ubuntu personally, as it's package manager will easily set you up for Apache ( great web server) and even php and mysql.

10Gb is a good size for a starting web server and OS. it will allow you to install the os about 5Gb and then the rest for the server, most of which is you probably wont use.

I don't use Linux a whole lot, I had it set up on my smaller old p3, which only had a 6gig HDD. I used DSL (Damn small linux). It was ok, a bit of a pain to configure since I don't know much about linux, but going through the forums and stuff I did get it set up finally. Then the internet starting freezing up the whole box, and it would just hang on downloads, I don't know if it was the wireless or what. Haven't messed with it since. It's back on the to do list.

I'm a fan of Fedora Core myself, for smaller systems DSL is a good choice.

I did used to use Kubuntu but then it all stopped working so I got rid of it! I'm currently downloading SlackWare but I'm aslo thinking of getting DSL as well. Thanks for the help guys! Do you mind if I post with firther issues once I've got SlackWare on my machine?

That's what we're here for. :) Note: May want to have a thread per issue, especially if they aren't related. |
Great thanks!!!
