iPhone

So I broke my phone using it as a flash light to get my parking break unstuck and when I did get it unstuck the petal flew out and cracked my phone into two. So now I'm looking for a decent phone. Thanks.

What are your thoughts on this new phone?

Also would you buy one? (Why or why not)

Do you hate Apple? (Why or why not)

Linux Phones, I've heard a little but yet to see one.

I am very impressed with the specs of the iPhone. The phone looks really good and really useful. I thought about buying the iPhone but what is holding me back is the $500 plus the monthly fee for the services iPhone will have (e.g. GPS, Internet, SMS, E-Mail, IM, etc). I bet the monthly bill will be very expensive just to have a phone that can do as much as the iPhone can.

I do not hate Apple but I wouldn't rush to buy a new 2 year contract with AT&T just to get the iPhone.

From what I have heard the IPhone is a big POS. I don't have any personal experience with it tho. My professor spent a whole class ranting on how bad it sucks and he actually doesn't mind Apple. I guess it has gotten some pretty crappy reviews as well. I guess it sacrificed a decent wireless card for the internet connection to make the phone smaller. It also doesn't support any out of company software... so no Java, which means no decent games, or Java script for websites. I guess there is a bunch more stuff like this that just makes it not that great. If you are looking for a phone like this that is probably much better, get a Blackberry... mine is great.

There are no reviews of the iPhone yet, it has not been released. So everything is speculation. From the commercials the interface looks to be pretty good, possibly better than any other smart phone out there. I suggest you get hands on with the device and see how much you like it (When its released of course). I have heard rumors that Apple has combine the vibrate functionality with the touch screen to provide a tactile "feedback" that a normal touch screen lacks. That is to make up for the lack of buttons or keyboard, if they can pull it off it will be very cool. Those keyboards on the current smart phones are holding them back.

I'm already with Cingular/ATT, and have never had a problem with it in nearly 4 years now.

When my current contract ends in November, I'll renew and get the iPhone, unless there's some kind of spectacular failure when I play round with it out in the store after launch.

@King: Slight correction, 3rd-party apps will be developed with JS/HTML, as it (almost certainly) uses Apple's WebKit renderer....there's more to it but basically it's ajax.

There's a nice guided tour up on the Apple website about the iPhone. It's worth checking out if you haven't heard much about it, or all you've heard are other peoples rants about it.
