To open source or not to open source, that is the question
 

I have a bit of a dilemma, I have what I feel is a good idea for a new piece of software. As far as I can tell nothing like this really exists yet or if there is, its not very well known or not quite all there.

My dilemma is making a decision whether or not I should make this project open source and free for all to use or try to make a bit of profit off of it.

I support open source and think its great, however, it seems that usually open source projects form when something is already in existence that costs money. the invention has already been made by someone else who made a profit, now someone makes a free version.

I want to make it open source but am afraid I could really be kicking myself later, kinda like losing a winning lottery ticket.

then again, maybe my idea is no good and will go nowhere.

I probably will end up making it open source, but I was just wondering what you would do, what your opinions on something like this is?

If you're indecisive, don't do it. If it's closed source, can always open source it later on - there's no hurry to make a quick decision. On the other hand, if you open source the code now, then you can't then ever take that code back.

If you make lots of money you can support my open source project :) . It's a compromise :D

I second Arevos' remarks. Many of us give time, money, or goods to charity, but it's usually after we've arranged for our own survival. Jillionaires often give away tons of money. I'm sure the recipients are glad they took the time and effort to make it.

I support open source and the concept of learning by example, etc, etc. However, at the same time, programmers have to make money. All of their projects, especially if they are running solo, cannot be open source. That is like asking a doctor, lawyer, auto mechanic, a store clerk, etc to work for free... it doesn't make a lot of sense.

I write code on the side to bring in money, in addition to my salary. I thought about this open source vs closed source debate a while back and decided that closed source doesn't pay off my student loans. I have a family to support and an extensive collection of whiskey and other expensive hobbies.

The only time I will ever open source a project, is if it is built on open source code, part of an open source project, requested by a non-profit organization, if I want to hammer competition, or if I intended it from the start to be educational.

I believe the same with everyone above! You can always make your application open source. One should be able to profit off of their talent!
