i have delphi 7.0 and i have VB.NET and VB 6.0
i was doing a comparison latley and i found out that there no different between delphi and VB this is just my opinion and i don't know any thing about delphi exept it create programs similar to VB what does dephi have more than VB ? |
Well, first off Delphi is much much faster than VB. Another thing is it has techniques you can use that you can't use in VB. Such as Global Hooks.
Delphi is also quite portable, because when you compile your program it's turned directly into machine code therefore it normally isn't picky about hardware. VB on the other hand, isn't portable at all. Visual BASIC was made by Microsoft, and to successfully have a VB application run you have to have the Visual BASIC runtime files on your computer, which only work on Windows. Delphi is superior to Visual Basic in terms of speed, compatability, flexibility, and power. |
Wait, Delphi is portable? I can code, compile, and run on Linux and MacOS X? Or do you just mean portable between Windows machines...?
My gripe is that it's a prorietary language that isn't worth learning if you already know VB. I mean... VB is proprietary as it is, but at least it's popular. Not to mention, has more than one application (VBScript, ASP, etc.). But both are weak languages. Do we really need another VB-like language out there? I'm not so sure. Oh, and sorry for the rant. I just wanted to voice my opinion on Delphi. No offense to those hard working, bread earning, Delphi coders out there. Coding is coding; fun is fun. :D |
I've been coding in VB for a while, and we recently started Delphi in school. I, personally, prefer VB - if you want to make a simple language, make it properly simple, and don't base everything off a language with weird syntax and an irritating construct.

Delphi is pascal on heroin.

Delphi is Pascal indeed. But is pascal object oriented language.
As someone said, delphi apps are portable to linux systems. There is Kylix, which is in fact Delphi for linux OS. And borland as free version of Delphi and Kylix named "Personal Edition". |
Well, let me introduce some others meanings:
Delphi is an archaeological site and a modern town in Greece, where lived an oracle (the oracle of Delphi), known as Pythia. She was the Pythian priestess of Python, an archaic chthonic serpent (that is where the logo of borland Delphi come!). Besides, there is a forecast method called Delphi (and a Delphi effect associated). Another meaning comes from the words Del - phi, where 'phi' is a well known number in maths (the gold number) which represents beauty and armony. (ups, I dont remember where Del comes from...) That's all folks! |

My dad uses Delphi at work and tells me that it compiles real fast, but it is mostly used for database stuff. He hates VB and its many files.
|
VB .NET beats Delphi all over the road. It has super-fast compile times, and none of the quirky bugs of Delphi. Also, if MS ports the .NET framework to Linux or Mac, it will be 100 % portable, complete with metadata and no setup programs. Beat that, Delphi!
NOTE: I program in Delphi and VB, best of both worlds. |
