Christmas came early! :)

For Christmas, my lovely wife bought me a Western Digital 1 TeraBtye (1TB) Pro Edition II MyBook (external hard drive). It is a dual-drive storage system with RAID and System Recovery Software. This one drive can hold more than all of the computers we own (~640GB), combined.

Here is the poop sheet:

Important: The My Book Pro Edition II hard drive ships with a HFS+ (Journaled) format. This Macintosh native format is not compatible with Windows based computers therefore the drive will need to be repartitioned and reformatted before usage in a Windows based computer.

Ever format a hard drive? Try formatting a TB... it has been a long time, and the format has only progressed to 7% complete.

What it can hold:
Up to 284,000 digital photos
Up to 250,000 songs (MP3)
Up to 24,000 songs (uncompressed CD quality)
Up to 76 hours of Digital Video (DV)
Up to 400 hours of DVD quality video
Up to 120 hours of HD video

Note: One gigabyte (GB) = one billion bytes. One terabyte (TB) = one trillion bytes.

nice, that should be nice for storing all those programs/scripts and code snippets you are holding on to

I'm thinking there'll be more photos and movies of the li'l one, than snippets ;). Nice catch, IR. The drive, too, of course.

Fortunately for me, the largest hard drive I have is 500GB, and it's partitioned up so the [increasingly rare] event of reformatting doesn't take too long. I do need to eventually change the 370GB NTFS partition to ext3 though...

Man, the time it would take me to fill 1TB... probably a couple weeks... :o

I think I'll go huggle my 1310GB capacity desktop again... :p

Damn, 1 TB huh?! That's awesome! What did you get her for Christmas?

I got a pink topaz and diamond ring that I've been lusting over for a while now. He was mean yesterday and told me to forget about the ring, that he was through Chritmas shopping and was NOT going to get it! Then he came home from work and gave it to me :) So I went ahead and gave him his external hard drive. He knew he was getting one, but he was expecting like a 250 GB one. We still have LOTS to open Christmas morning though :)

Don't shake and rattle the others, trying to guess. There might be a terrarium in there....

Wow 1TB! largest hard drive I ever had is this 80gb that i have right now! :p

I have a pretty good method at guessing gifts... so I know most of what I have under the tree. I must say though, I was very surprised when I saw that the capacity I was expecting increased x4. The largest single drive that I had prior to this was 300GB, definitely an upgrade.

I imagine most of it will be filled with pictures and videos of the baby. But I definitely will use it to store my knowledge base, source code archive, and other files that are important. It wasn't compatible with Linux out of the box, but that's where Samba will come in. :)
