Did you look though the Java forum by any chance? There's a thread there containing the same questions. A simple search on "Java Book" revealed it to be here. We also have a tutorial section that has one thread containing dozens of links to tutorial material for most languages. There are 18 links under JAVA. That would be located here.

As a newcomer to the forum, I'd also recommend you read the rules/FAQ, the Smart Questions site it links to, and a "How to Post a Question" thread; one may be found as a sticky at the top of the C forum.

I suggest starting with BASIC or COBOL, but if you want to start with Java, first things first. If you can get it installed, that's half the battle.

BASIC or COBOL? If we're going to start recommending languages to start on before Java, then might I suggest that Python may be the better choice?

Of course. I was just trying to give my opinion that Java is not the best language to start with.

Also, I think getting started with Java is sometimes fairly difficult. If you need help getting started, please ask questions here.

And COBOL IS NOT?! JUST READING IT MAKES MY HEAD HURT!
