Hey there people just wondering if anyone can help a typical girlly girl with what you guys my see as a very simple question...
is it possible to use directx 9 with visual basic 6 or do you have to use .net?? whats the difference between directx 9 and directx9 sdk?? im designing a 3d game for a project, is this the right combo to use?? ever so grateful for anyones help  |
First off, if you wanna make a game, I suggest C++ - there are so many benefits it's not even funny. If you still want to use VB, however, it's possible to use the DX APIs with both v6 and .NET (though I think you may have to have the Standard Edition up - not the Learning Edition, in case that's what you have).

It looks to me though you have to use VB.NET, C# or just plain old C++ for directX 9. For VB 6 you'll need the directx 8.1 SDK, however, microskank (M$) has discontinued the download at there site. The difference between just DirectX and the DirectX SDK, is that DirectX is just for running programs, and the SDK is for building games with. Also, you might want to look at OpenGL which is another SDK (Software Development Kit) for graphics.

I would also suggest using OpenGL, you can implement it in VB as well here is a site with tutorials on OpenGL and someone has ported the code from cpp to VB.
Nehe Productions But cpp would probably be easier and faster for openGL programming. If you have any questions or such feel free to pm. |
VB in theory runs 100x slower than C++ when it is ran. If its at all possible to design it in C++ it should be a must and at the very list a high priority and VB should be a last option. However, good luck with this...
