Programming competitions

Well i was thinking.
what if we have a challenge forum where there will be a monthly challenge between members on a program which will be announced by a moderator.
it seems to be a good learning :beard:

hey... great idea... it could actullaly be very good for us newbies and others who donīt get to program very much.. but shouldnīt be too big competitions though... 1 or 2 days competitions or maybe a week.. just small programs, and something that is possible in all (most at least) programming languages..

It could be a good idea. Competitions lead to cheating in forums. If you post your code someone else could easily read your code and improve on it. If you make it too easy the more experienced programmers might not be motivated to do it and if you make it too hard then beginners might find it impossible to compete.

On the languages side there should be a selection to choose form. The problem is that someone has to judge them and if they have not used that language before they might find it harder to understand your code. There probably should be a limit on the number of lines of code too. I am not sure it would work too well as who would judge them. In most forums there is bias and so some people might favor a select few. Its also quite time consuming analysing other peoples code so I dont think it should be a regular event. Also I would want to know the marking criteria and all the rules. :)

Look, the program shouldn't be judged by analyzing the cede, it should be judged on how it runs. When someone makes a program for the general public, does he hand out the code for everyone to read and admire or does he give out a functioning program?

We could have reverse engineering competitions.

Could, but I bet the majority of the members here may not know how to do it. It's not an easy task. It's always something I've wanted to try, but I do't have enough time.

We've tried competitions a few times. No one ever enters, and no one can be bothered to think of interesting and challenging problems.

The real hard part is judging a competition, let alone the picking a challenging problem

I'm pretty sure there are several sites that already have this type of stuff. Why not just post a link when you come across one and whoever wants to participate can?

If you are really bored and are itching to write code for fun / torture, I could use a web-based / remote control utility for my Logitech Orbit (http://www.logitech.com/index.cfm/pr...NTENTID=10628).
