Sun Server Stacks.
Hey. In one of my other threads I said that I was building a server box. Well, that's going back in the closet, because a colleague of my dad's has a bunch of sun server stacks laying around his house from when he used to set them up and he's going to give me some. I have absolutely no experience with Solaris or server stacks. I'll probably get them later this week, but before I do, what do I need to know about solaris, sun, and server stacks in general?

Whoops, I guess it's called a rackmount server, sorry about that. I would still love any help, though.

Must be nice... Do you have multiple boxes or just one? Most of what you need you can grab here: http://www.sun.com/download/.
Solaris is a lot like Linux, so if you already know Linux... learning Solaris will be a matter of learning the differences in keywords, etc. Look into administration and security tutorials via Google. |
I'm pretty sure he's giving me a couple of rackmount servers. Does each one function as a single machine or do they all work together to form one really nice one?
|
Sounds like you got a good deal. Depends on how you configure them.

I know I'm getting a good deal :). Hopefully, I can finally get my site online before the end of summer.

At my old school they used Sun Servers. I think they were AMD Opteron based and not SPARC based. We had one or two computers with Solaris installed for the uber geeks to mess about with. I never bothered with it though so i can't say what it is like to use. Sun hardware is meant to be well built and reliable so it should make a good web server. Sounds like something you will learn alot from.

I believe that these servers are a couple years old (Although not so old that they are obsolete) so they are probably SPARC based. I don't really have much information at this point other than a friend has some rackmount servers that he wants to give me.
