To bypass a useless pack...

Ok, I just downloaded visual basic 2005 enterprise edition from Microsoft itself...The problem is, setup doesn't want to run unless I have that stupid good for nothing service pack 2 installed. Is there a way to bypass that check? I really hate Service Pack 2!!! It messes with my PC, and that stupid update check is really annoying. I had to reformat my PC, and I was thankful SP2 is gone.

would you rather have SP2 mess with your pc, or some 9 years old script kid?

DaWei Aug 21st, 2006 1:12 PM

I'm guessing that you have to meet the installation requirements or forego the newer stuff. Did you read those requirements? As in (for XP) SP2? Want to go here and read the right-hand column? Seems silly, I know.

I didn't find SP2 that bad. Once you have it installed you can turn off most of the features. How did it mess up your computer? I have SP2 installed on 2 of my Windows boxes and they work totally fine.

I'll take my chances on the 9 years old...at least VB6 is still out there being used by some high paying companies here in the Philippines, so i still have a future looking ahead of me. I'd rather that than SP2 or any of its securities; I'd rather have ZoneAlarm with AVG thank you very much.

In short, I'm fine with VB6, but it would be better if I could install VBE w/o SP2

There is probably a technical reason why it wont install on anything less than SP2. They would not just make it a requirement if it was not needed. There is probably no way to trick the installer into thinking its on XP SP2. Even if you could you might find that the software does not work properly. If you really cant bring yourself to install SP2 then go without and find an alternative. :)

Edit:- dont bet your future on VB6. MS are pulling support for it and so many companies will have already started or will start to think about a new system. VB.net is what many of them will choose as the new system so learning it will not hurt. There will be a need to support VB6 code for a few more years yet, but i would think that the number of jobs for it will decrease. There is an alternative to visual stuidio in sharp develop. Its not nearly as good as VS but at least you wont have to install SP2.

hmm...Thanks, Random Spirit, I'll keep that in mind...anyway, the way I see it, since MS owns VBE, they can just tell you to get some more of their software for it to run.

By the way, to answer King's question: Dude, read this article from Wikipedia.

It shows that some computers had problems with their apps after installation of SP2.

Do you have any idea how long ago that was? Any problems with it are long gone... and the benefits far outweigh the negatives.

Wikipedia, your source of perfectly accurate information (see C/PM or, as they put it, CP/M) ;) .

To:andro

Well, one of those "outweighed negatives" is that my PC crashed a few months ago when I had it installed. I almost didn't recover my files, you know..
