File_Splitter
1 Attachment(s)
Over the last two days ive written a program that allows files to be split into equally sized chunks, and put them back together again.
When I started writing it, it went well, too well, I hit a brick wall, but then yesterday an idea came to me while talking with my friend from another forum. The idea paid off and I got the application running smoothly, unlike before hand when my PC was hanging while splitting bigger files, due to the memory usage ( bad coding). Initially options were 2, 4 or 6 pieces but I only enabled 4 for the time being; 2 & 6 will be added again probably tonight, but Im not sure of wether to scrap the 2/4/6 idea and allow the user to customisebly choose file size, we can talk of ideas if we get any testers though. Now here with the first build, capable of splitting any file type into 4 pieces and also capable of rejoining them. This is written in VB.NET 2005, requires .NET2 Framework, Created on a Windows XP Pro machine; Im not yet sure of compatibility on other Windows versions. I appreciate any time anybody takes to use this program and would like to ask for any feedback or comment/ideas to further better it. Id like someone to test its limits with file size. At home I only have two 4G HDD's and one of them is obviously holding my OS and is nearly taken up, the other is program files and stuff, so not alot of space for me to test with huge files. Last night I split a 697MB file 4 ways in 4 minutes, I dont think this is to bad if you consider my computer is almost obsolete. Maybe some people here already use a file splitter and can compare it? Also testing on other Windows Systems other than XP would be nice to here the outcome of. Thanks. P.s the layout probably isnt ideal, but im confident people here will get round it, if you have any problems about using it then just post and il promptly answer People may be reluctant to run an .exe, thats understandable. I dont exaclty know if the rules are 'Only post source' but if it is brought to my attention afterwards I will apologize and remove the file, if possible, or I assume a mod would. Source will be posted when the program is further bettered. |
the logic sounds kinda easy to implement.............what did you get stuck on just for curiosity
