Sound drivers installed correctly? Try reinstalling them. Mobo chipset drivers installed?

Are you sure there's no software mute?

If you're using KDE, try using KMix.

If you're not using KDE and using ALSA, try using alsamixer.

If you've got your sound icon in the system tray, right click it and select 'Open Volume Control'. This should give sliders for all the different things, like so:

Make sure that all relevant sliders, not just the main volume one, are set properly. In particular, if the wave balance is set too low, it will affect most things (MP3s, games, etc).
