First thing is first... Invader Zim... NOTHING beats Invader Zim... THE PANTS COMMAND ME! (Some of you will understand, others will not... to bad for the ones that do not).

I am presently 21 years old (as of March 16th, 2004). Living on my own in the downtown (North End) core of Halifax, Nova Scotia.

I have been programming for a REALLY long time. Introduced myself with QBasic, went to Pascal, picked up some ASM (also a bit of an electronics hobbiest, so this helps), C and C++. By the point when I actually transitioned into C++ it really only took like 2 weeks to learn it, then maybe another week to learn STL... and it is presently the language I sweat by.

Somewhere along the way I picked up PHP, a good bit of Perl, I can do HTML pretty well now too, and basic CSS stuff. Leanred APIs such as Win32, VCL, DirectX (DShow can be fun), and iButton. I am presently working on picking up Qt + KDE, once I am done with that I need to learn C# and Python for this summer.. I am told that Python is a very usefull little language, looks it to. And well C# is not on the list since the mono project has hit one of their bigger milestones--making is decently useable on linux.

I am self employed, a freelance programmer to say the least. I work on a contract to contract basis, working on a nice one from California right now, and a handfull of realy small ones from Toronto. I intend on situation myself more with project management in the future as I have more and more time to work on a specific project of mine. I also like to open source stuff fairly often. I have several projects up on my website http://www.cliffordroche.com--though a far cry from most of the work I am done, I will eventually put other projects up there as they mature.

That about sums it up... I think.

If anyone needs hosting solutions, web design or consulting, or general computer administration or consulting, you should give me a shout at: geek@crdev-consulting.biz (website: http://www.crdev-consulting.biz) is soon to be online. (been too busy to even look at it for more then an hour a day, but it is getting there. Another two week I think until it is ready).

You seem to know quite a bit. Nice to meet you.

OMG! I think I forgot to spell last night too, lol.... *shrugs*

I am normally not that bad! I swear, lol. Oh well Nice to meet the lot of you. This place looks very promising, I am hoping that it continues to grow and more interesting people come along. I needed a programming forum to stop by.... Gentoo forums, though interesting, are not really filling that void.

I suppose I will be chatting with a lot of you much more, looking forward to it

BTW...You are exactly 1 year older than me, as my birthday is March 16, 1984.

'Lo there. Welcome to Programming Forums. I've only been here a few hours myself, but it's a nice place.

I've always wanted to learn STL - never really got round to it. How did you learn it? Can you recommend any books?

STl is really simple, honestly.. it is just a series of classes (and templates) provided for you for use within the C++ environment (std namespace). Just open up MSDN or google it, I am sure once you try to learn it you will find it incredibly simple.

THe only thing you really need to understand are templates, and you are set.

STL is very nice... takes a lot of work out of data structures, etc.
Here is a link to the Silicon Graphics Inc site where I first learned STL...

SGI's STL (http://www.sgi.com/tech/stl/)
