Once you place a number in a column , then it obviously can't be used in a 'shared' entity (row OR square). That means when you are choosing numbers for, say, the shared row, you choice is not from among all digits, but only from among those not in the column. By restricting the set you make random choices from, you'll no doubt have a somewhat easier time of it.
