this is how i learned. also generally i enjoy the "SAMS teach yourself 'whatever' in 21 days" series, although the java one is probably best only for experienced programmers. i think the c++ book they have is the best one. just take your time and make sure you KNOW what's going on, cuz it gets pretty hairy pretty quick.

tip for buying books:

you can get books from amazon for less than a dollar or other small amount if you check their "used" sections. i've gotten about ten books for less than $2 from them all pretty much brand new, some even with the original un-opened cd-rom!
