Why do it in Asp, have to run a unsecure server app, on a unsecure OS, and have to pay for it all, when you can do it in PHP for free, on a secure linux server. Little more work, but it's worth it in the long run. Let alone, if it's in asp, anything other than IE will have some problems running it.
I've never used PHP, but I'd like to learn. I had exposure to ASP.NET in one of my courses, and I absolutely loathed it, but that might be because our instructor had us using VB.NET as the language for server-side scripting.

I think .NET is great for application programming, simply because its for windows, and most people use windows, especially when you simply going to target windows only, but it has no use on the web because of browsers and OS's. It might be good for internal networks/intranets. That's the only reason I would use it.

I like ASP.NET, but I hate VB, even VB.NET. So I'd loathe it too if I were to use it with VB.NET, with C# it's very elegant IMO.

If I were going to do Asp.Net, I would probably do it in C# too. I think why so many people have been teaching it VB.NET is because Asp was orginally done with VB6 if I remember correctly.
